Unleashing Joy with UpDog

What if a simple game of fetch could transform your connection with your dog and your community?

For many dog lovers, the idea of turning playtime into a competitive sport may sound far-fetched. But for thousands of others in the UpDog community, disc and dog sports have become a fun, inclusive, and life-changing pastime.

We spoke to UpDog judge Bekki Davidson to learn how the UpDog Challenge is bringing the benefits of disc sports to every dog, no matter their breed, age, or ability.

What Is UpDog?

UpDog Challenge is a disc dog competition series with a twist. It’s not just about throwing the farthest or the fanciest. It’s about connection, community, and making canine sports accessible to everyone.

From puppies and seniors to rescue dogs and purebreds, UpDog welcomes all dog owners into a world where teamwork and fun take center stage.

Unlike traditional disc dog sports that can be intimidating to beginners, UpDog offers a variety of games ranging from basic toss-and-fetch like Throw N Go, to creative routines in Freestyle, complete with music and even costumes.

“There’s a game for everybody, for every level and every experience,” Bekki says. “It’s all about just having fun with your dog.”

Bekki's Journey to UpDog

Bekki was introduced to UpDog through friends she knew from other dog sports like flyball and agility. With a young, timid puppy in tow, she tried her first UpDog event and never looked back.

“Everyone was encouraging. My shy puppy turned into a confident dog out on the field,” she recalls. Even her daughter, who started playing at age two, has grown up in this supportive environment.

More Than a Sport

UpDog is about so much more than scoring points. It’s a place where confidence is built, friendships are forged, and families bond. Bekki describes it as a village, one that not only nurtures her puppy’s development but also deepens her own connection with her dogs and the people around her.

“Whenever you spend time with your dog, you’re building a connection,” she says. “But this takes it to another level.”

The UpDog International Finals (UpDiff)

Every year, UpDog hosts its flagship event: the UpDog International Finals, also known as UpDiff.

To qualify, teams accumulate points throughout the year by competing in local events hosted by clubs across the country and around the world. Dogs of all sizes and breeds gather to compete, not just for prizes, but for personal bests and pure joy.

In 2024, UpDiff was held in Kentucky, drawing competitors from Canada, Australia, Poland, Japan, and Colombia. Next year, the Finals will move to North Carolina.

Back on Track and UpDog

Back on Track USA proudly partnered with UpDog as a sponsor of the 2024 Finals, bringing performance and recovery gear to handlers and dogs alike.

The Cool on Track Cooling Dog Coats, Towels, and Bandanas provided at the finals were a hit with judges and handlers spending long hours under the sun.

Bekki, a longtime fan of Back on Track, helped spearhead the partnership.

“I took a chance and reached out, and I’m so glad I did,” she said. “Everybody loved it. The dogs can even compete in their bandanas!”

For UpDog athletes, comfort and recovery are crucial. Whether you’re tossing discs or judging from the sidelines, staying cool and supported makes all the difference.

Getting Started with UpDog

Thinking of joining the fun? The best place to start is the UpDog Challenge website or the UpDog Challenge Facebook Discussion Page.

You’ll find information on local clubs, upcoming events, and even how to start your own club if there’s not one nearby.

New to disc dog sports? That’s totally fine! Just come to an event, ask questions, and maybe sign up to play a game or two.

“I’ve never been to an event that wasn’t friendly,” Bekki says. “You’re always welcome.”

A Final Word from Bekki

“Just get out there and play with your dog. Go out there and have fun—that’s the point of UpDog.”

We couldn’t agree more.
