5 Great Tips For Taking Care Of Your Horse

Each year in the U.S., an estimated 7 million people ride horses. Spending a weekend or two riding horses can be a lot of fun, but there is nothing like actually owning your own horse. There are plenty of important responsibilities when it comes to caring for any kind of pet or animal. Caring for horses, however, requires even more time, energy, and resources. Here are some great tips for taking better care of your horse:

  • Trim hooves every six to eight weeks -- For horses whose feet do not get adequate natural wear, you need to make sure you are trimming their hooves on a regular basis. Finding a professional veterinarian or farrier can help you find shoeing options to avoid hoof problems, as well.
  • Brush your horse every day -- The more you brush, the more you will distribute natural sebum evenly over your horse's hair. It'll feel tiring at first, but your horse will certainly benefit from regular brushing and it'll be a nice workout, too.
  • Get a nice horse cover -- During those cold winter nights, you need to make sure your horse is comfortable. Horse fleece blankets and horse neck covers are great for keeping them snug and out of the frigid cold. It's important to note, however, that since horses are giant creatures, weighing up to 2,200 pounds, you'll need very large horse covers.
  • Don't use too much oil -- Oil can be great for a horse, especially on their face. If you're using oil on their face, however, it's best to use it sparingly. Using the right amount of oil can provide a nice, natural look. Conversely, using too much oil will give off a greasy appearance.
  • Use baby powder -- Don't use too much, but applying a little bit of baby powder to your horse can hide any blemishes and help your horse look great. Applying a little bit of baby powder to your horse is perfect if you're preparing for a show.
